Global Health and Christianity

As a Christian, I believe that it is my moral obligation to help those in need. God has provided generously for me and for my country and I believe that the only appropriate response is to return such provision to those who need it. God calls mankind through the Scriptures to love one another, and to treat others the way you would want to be treated. When in times of need, the United States should provide for other nations because that is a form of loving your neighbor. Mark 12:31 says, “‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (ESV) The Bible calls to extend love to your neighbor and to treat them as you would want someone else to treat you. Should the United States be in need, they would desire the same help that other nations require. This verse presents a standard of behavior for all Christians to model. I believe that following this mandate entails helping those less fortunate in any way possible.

Scripture is very clear on how to extend help or generosity to others. Proverbs 3:27 states, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.” I believe that this verse is referencing helping one another as well. It specifically states that people ought to provide for one another when they are capable of doing so. This verse applies to individuals, but also nations. Nations ought to help one another when necessary, both because it is the right thing to do, but also because mankind is morally obligated to do so. Scripture calls believers to extend love and generosity to those in need, when they have the capacity to do so. People ought to love their neighbor to the best of their ability and extend goodness and aid in any way possible.
